How Maryland’s Lady Terps Won This Year’s Big Ten Championship

The Maryland women’s basketball team continued its strong play this season, using a well-balanced scoring attack to capture its second straight Big Ten championship with a 60-44 win over Michigan State Sunday night. Walker-Kimbrough led the way for the Terps with 19 points, while Jones finished with 10 points and 14 rebounds for another double-double.

The Terps, the top-seeded team in the tournament, now await their place in the NCAA Tournament. They’re expected to find out where they’ll play and against who in next Monday’s Selection Show.

On Saturday, Maryland showed their chops defeating Northwestern to reach the final.

Five players finished in double figures for Maryland, with 17 points apiece from senior forward Tierney Pfirman and junior center Brionna Jones leading the way. Jones also contributed 11 rebounds for the Terps.

Junior forward Shatori Walker-Kimbrough and senior guard Brene Moseley each recorded 15 points and five assists, while sophomore guard Kristen Confroy added 11 points.

Northwestern had been the Cinderella story of the tournament, defeating No. 13 Wisconsin and No. 5 Minnesota before an 84-74 win over fourth-seeded Indiana propelled them into the semifinals. The game against Maryland was the fourth in as many days for the Wildcats.

Early on, it appeared as though fatigue would not be a factor for Northwestern. The Wildcats hung tough and even outscored the Terps 16-12 in the second quarter for a halftime deficit of just seven points.

However, Maryland was able to pull away in the second half, using a 12-0 run near the beginning of the fourth quarter to take control of the game. They also successfully shut down the Wildcats’ offensive weapons besides junior forward Nia Coffey, who scored 31 of her team’s 62 points.

Maryland advanced to Saturday’s game with a 75-55 victory Friday in the quarterfinals against Iowa. Walker-Kimbrough and Jones scored 23 points each to lead the team, and Jones added an impressive 15 rebounds.
