The Montgomery County Executive Gala was held on Thursday September 18, 2014 at the Fillmore in Silver Spring, Maryland. Guests received a pleasant surprise when Claudia Canales, Event Chair and proud Salvadorian-American, announced that they had surpassed its goal of 50 scholarships by 10.

Each scholarship recipient received $2,000. This scholarship was open to any Hispanic students who are enrolled in a higher education institution in Maryland.

Out of 60 students, 12 were from the University of Maryland, College Park.

During the celebration, the President of the University of Maryland, President Loh, was honored with the Advocate of the Year Award. He walked on stage and started greeting the public in Spanish. It was apparent that President Loh didn’t have a speech prepared but he took it like a Terp and gave a really moving speech.
