Daytime television made major headlines earlier this week when Michael Strahan announced that he would be leaving ABC’s Live! With Kelly and Michael after hosting the show along daytime heavyweight Kelly Ripa for almost four years.
While we’re happy for Strahan and his future position as a full-time host of Good Morning America, chemistry between Ripa and Strahan is hard to find in America’s nationwide web of TV personality.
But just for kicks and giggles, let’s take a stab at thinking up the athlete turned anchor’s forthcoming replacement anyway.
The Ricky to Ripa’s Lucy, Consuelos is a no brainer. I repeat, NO BRAINER. Not only is there no need to worry about Consuelos’ chemistry with Ripa (the two are adorably married with children), but there is also no need to worry about Consuelos’ chemistry with the camera. Ripa’s hubby has been acting for years, hosted multiple dating shows in the past and already guest-hosts with his beau from time to time anyway. And his looks aren’t too shabby, either. I mean, could this match be any more perfect?
Okay, give it a chance. Sure she’s a total firecracker a little more suited for the punch and pizazz of late night programing. But, somewhere deep inside, she also knows when to scale back, and has experience carrying a show, as evidenced by her brief but impressive gig hosting the E! network’s Fashion Police. Think about it: two funny women letting loose early in the morning over major headlines in a swirling little pool of belly laughs and estrogen. Give it some time. These two might just go together like salt and pepper…salt and cayenne pepper.
Yeah, yeah, yeah. He already has a job. But with over a dozen late-night talk shows running around these days, would we really miss him if he left? Let’s just kick it back to the good ol’ days when Meyers used to kill it every week on SNL’s Weekend Update. Sure, the guy is great on his own, but he was even better when he was bouncing off the femininity of other people for entertainment. Stefon, Amy Poehler, Kristen Wiig. Need I say more? Together, these two would fit like a glove as the cheeky, little America’s sweethearts that they are.
He’s no pro in the world of daytime television folks, but he is a great spokesman with a best-selling self-help book on the market and a wholesome family-man image to match. Not to mention that signature pec dance he likes to pull out wherever and whenever. C’mon, a tall/dark/handsome, former NFL player with a killer smile and a sense of humor? Kelly, don’t worry. It’ll be like Michael never left.
Yeah, alright. Technically, Cohen’s got a show of his own, too. And on late night, nonetheless. Though we love to see him sipping cocktails with today’s biggest celebs and talking up the real housewives of wherever, there is no denying that primetime with Ripa would be a step up for the charismatic party-giver. These two would make a great pair as two bubbly, chatter boxes spritzing up the Live! legacy with both charm and breeziness.
We can hear it now: “THIS……………is Live! With Kelly and Ryan.” Yes, Seacrest just came off a 15-season run as host of American Idol, but the millionaire media mogul is known to be a total workaholic. So why not have him jump right into another project as Ripa’s right-hand man? Dapper, sophisticated and obviously experienced, Seacrest’s sarcasm could be the perfect off-set to Ripa’s more animated personality. Not to mention, the pair would be voted best dressed of daytime like, every year, no questions asked.
If we’re going to throw it back, let’s throw it waaaaaay back to when Ripa used to host her show alongside the legendary Regis Philbin. Of course, Larry and his iconic suspenders get-up, though revered, are no Regis. But hey, he’s a veteran in the biz with a surprisingly great sense of humor, and she’s a youthful sweetie pie with a flair for the modern. Together, she could be the cheese to his mac, the lightning to his thunder, the Kim to his Kanye.
Oh, so many choices and so little time. There is no telling whose talents will snag that seat, but here’s hoping for someone smart, sweet and here to stay.
So, who do you think should fill Strahan’s chair?
